Our Vision
Men's Shed Pontyclun was established in March 2023 and we have a vision for how we want to grow and what activities we aim to provide as accommodation, equipment and funds permit.
1. Social, Friendship, Skills & Wellbeing
This is at the heart of what Men's Sheds are all about, regardless of any specific activities organised. We aim to promote good health and wellbeing for men who want to get out of the house a bit, learn or share skills, or simply enjoy the camaraderie or engaging in activities together with other men from the neighbourhood. Whatever the activity, it is always lubricated by a fresh brew and a chat.
2. Growing & Gardening
The first arm of activity to be established for Men's Shed Pontyclun was the Allotment, complete with our large and comfortable shed. The Shed serves as a meeting space, with hot drinks and nibbles available.
Our aim on the allotment is to grow useful things, either for our own benefit or to give to good local causes. It's also a way for some men to share and learn gardening skills. Find out more on Our Allotment page.
3. WeCycle - The Bike Shed
We have started a local facility for repairing, maintaining and building bicycles with a small team of men skilled in this area. We occasionally receive donations of bicycles of all types and have brought them up to a safe and usable standard. These we either sell to raise funds for our Men's Shed or give to local recipients in need. Currently we operate from the Men's Shed workshop, and regularly participate in the monthly Repair Cafe Pontyclun. We are working towards establishing a dedicated bicycle repair workshop in the centre of Pontyclun town. Find out more on the WeCycle page.
4. The Workshop
We are in the process of establishing a woodwork and repair workshop. We have available a secure space of 43 square metres in Mwyndy, Pontyclun which we are now fitting out ready to take a wide range of woodworking machinery and other tools. Here members can learn or pass on skills, and make or mend things for themselves or others. Find out more on Our Workshop page
5. Repair Cafe Pontyclun
In association with Repair Cafe Wales we staff and support this monthly pop-up event in Pontyclun. Here volunteers aim to fix household items for free in order to reduce waste, teach skills and bring the community together.
The types of things we fix include household electrical items, woodwork, toys, tools, jewellery, furniture and bikes. Our time is given free but donations are welcome to help cover our costs. Any spare parts or consumables need to be purchased by the customer.
You can contact the Repair Cafe Pontyclun by emailing [email protected]
6. Community Activities
We like to put something back into our community where we can. For example:
Once a month we organise a litter pick around the centre of town and we gather up many sacks of rubbish which has been left out in the open.
Some of our men carried out a major tidy-up of the Covid Memorial Garden at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital and we return periodically to keep it in good order.
We helped clear an overgrown garden at the Short Term Respite Care Centre in Brynsadler so that landscaping improvements can be made for residents.
7. Tools Recycling
Working in partnership with TWAM - Tools with a Mission, we collect unwanted usable tools, get them refurbished, sorted into trade tool kits and send them to the developing world for livelihood creation.
